UMOJA is a monthly magazine that delivers positive news by and about Madison’s Black community. Noted for its rich cover art, UMOJA has assembled a few of the magazine’s stunning 275 covers for the A Mirror Image: The Village Reflects on Itself Exhibit to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The exhibit is in Ebling Library’s 3rd floor art galleries and runs through August 4th, 2015. The covers (and some of the original artwork) principally showcase original artwork by recognized local and national Black artists.
The magazine’s content is as informative and illuminating as the covers are appealing and memorable. UMOJA focuses on positive news of individual achievements, role models, family life, creativity and community events; records contemporary history; and shows how the African American community enhances the quality of life in Dane County. In Swahili UMOJA means unity, which the magazine achieves by helping people discover, appreciate and connect with one another.
The UMOJA Exhibit illustrates how the magazine offsets stereotypes and gives people a chance to share universal experiences such as music, graduation and worship. A fair number also represent a health care theme, which was of particular interest.
