After a long night<\/p>\n

(or morning?)<\/p>\n

of studying, you imagine<\/p>\n

wedging a bookmark<\/p>\n

into your gray matter\u2014<\/p>\n

a bookmark, because<\/p>\n

who would want<\/p>\n

a dog-eared brain?<\/p>\n

You can never remember<\/p>\n

where you leave off.<\/p>\n

The brain does not catalogue<\/p>\n

like a filing cabinet,<\/p>\n

but if it did,<\/p>\n

what would you lock<\/p>\n

in the cortex\u2019s folds?<\/p>\n

Memories for safe keeping,<\/p>\n

or ones to forget?<\/p>\n

Some recollections<\/p>\n

always stay<\/p>\n

out of sight,<\/p>\n

whether or not<\/p>\n

you want them to,<\/p>\n

and the cabinets collect<\/p>\n

shrouds of dust\u2014<\/p>\n

unlike poetry, memories<\/p>\n

never read\u00a0from left<\/p>\n

to right. Your brain<\/p>\n

is a studio,<\/p>\n

not an office, your mind<\/p>\n

a beautiful, furious network<\/p>\n

of paint splatters,<\/p>\n

overlapped and intertwined.<\/p>\n
