A Stupid or Torpid Stage
Drinking to excess often comes with a physical price. While stumbling home late one night, a man trips on the stairs to his porch, waking his wife and child. Oblivious to his family watching him, he vomits on the threshhold, sending his scared child into the protective fold of his mother.
A secondary image is included showing the physical effects of our partier in the painful throes of a hangover. Weems describes our hungover friend, "...a hapless wretch, hawking, spitting, and vomiting mess who has lost the ruddy redness of his cheeks and good nature the previous night." Weems shows little empathy for the sour physical feeling being experienced.
