mother and woman finding children in log

A Cure for Drunkenness, the Divine

Weem retells the story of these three hungry children, no older than 6 years old, who ventured out to find their mother after hours of being alone. They were found the next morning wrapped in each other arms to protect one another from the frigid temperatures, having died from exposure during the night. Weems uses this image to represent the Divine's intervention, or solution, for drunkenness in women. While this is a drastic example, our view of mothers as nurturing caregivers, easily transforms into one of monsters upon hearing stories of harm befalling children at the hand of parents with substance abuse issues.
