Anatomia Practica Rationalis
Steven Blankaart
1688

Steven Blankaart studied medicine at Franeker and later settled in Amsterdam, where he became a famous physician. Today he is considered an important Dutch
physician and medical author. The frontispiece to his work on anatomy contains a classical depiction of a dissection, similar to others in this exhibition, where the demonstration is carried out within a larger context. There is an inscription at the bottom of the page that translates as “Know Thyself,” referring simultaneously to the knowledge contained within the book, as well as the practice of anatomy and its window into the nature of the human form.
