Cours D ’Operations de Chirurgie
Pierre Dionis
1714

This engraving shows a view of the Jardin du Roi
in Paris and its extensive botanical gardens. Finely dressed men, women, and children enjoy the grounds of the institution, often described as a “seedbed” of science. Physicians could
receive instruction in botany, and an anatomical theater was created in addition to rooms for chemistry and astronomy. This atmosphere led to an interdisciplinary approach to many different types of scientific activity.
