De Arte Gymnastica Libri Sex
Girolamo Mercurialis
1672

Girolamo Mercurialis was a professor of medicine at Bologna and Pisa. He was a strong advocate for benefits of exercise to maintain good health. This book, first published in 1569, was written to encourage exercise through the description of ancient practices, and therefore compiles a great deal of information on ancient physical therapy. Later editions added numerous illustrations to Mercurialis’ text, including this edition from 1672 which, in addition to woodcuts throughout the text, also features a number of large, fold-out engravings illustrating ancient contests, games, and activities.
