De Arte Gymnastica Libri Sex
Girolamo Mercurialis
1672

The large engravings fold out of the book to create elaborate views of ancient games. Roman gladiator fights are depicted with all of their intensity intact - severed hands lie on the arena ground, and a casualty
lies on a stretcher. Another engraving shows an enormous mock naval battle at the coliseum at Verona, Italy, with ships locked in combat as spectators fill the seats. The arena survives in Verona, and is still used today for opera perfomances.
