Herb gathering featured prominently in the lives of common people living in a rural or natural world. The cultivation and gathering of herbs and plants for their healing properties necessarily required proper plant identification since herbs could aid in healing, but also could prove poisonous. Medicinal plant handbooks often served as sources of botanical identification.

The Tacuinum Sanitatis or Handbook of Health is a medieval handbook based on Arab medical treatises. It exists in several variant Latin versions. It describes the beneficial and harmful properties of foods and plants, sections on breathing, exercise, rest, and mental health.
