Pharmaceutical Resources on the Internet

Locating High Quality Internet Resources

Locating High Quality Internet Resources
Think in Terms of Print Resources

Government agencies, associations, and organizations that publish print information are likely to make the information available at their Web site. For example:

  • FDA publishes information pertaining to legal aspects of pharmacy: FDA Website
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH) publishes print pamphlets and reports: NIH Website

Associations and organizations post information and publications at their Web sites and may maintain listservs or discussion groups. For example:

  • American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) publishes print materials: APhA Website
  • American Medical Association (AMA) provides print resources: AMA Website
  • Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association publishes directories, etc.: PhRMA Website

Print Guides to Internet Resources: Many of the "classic" guides to literature now include Internet resources as well. For example:

Drug Information: A Guide to Current Resources. 2nd edition. Snow, Bonnie. Medical Library Association. 1999.

Utilize the Expertise of Others

Websites of University Academic Departments often provide information on faculty bibliographies, departmental research projects and laboratories, or links to selected Web sites in the subject area. For example:

Many UW-Madison School of Pharmacy faculty members list complete bibliographies of their published papers at their Website:
UW-Madison School of Pharmacy

UW-Madison School of Pharmacy Faculty

Other knowledgeable individuals now use the Web as a publishing medium. For example, librarians maintain lists of Web resources; pharmacists maintain links to wide array of Web resources

HealthWeb is a consortium of Midwestern Health Sciences Libraries that seek to identify high quality health related Web resources

IDIN's Links: The Iowa Drug Information Network maintains a lengthy list of links to Internet resources for the Pharmaceutical community

Resource Discovery Projects and Organizations locate high quality Internet Resources and notify others about them. For example:

The Internet Scout Project, funded by the National Science Foundation, locates the latest high quality Internet resources that are of interest to academic faculty and researchers. Visit the site to browse one of four electronic newsletters, or subscribe to a free email edition; You can also search or browse an archive of resources that have been featured in past issues

Consult directories and resources to locate agencies or organizations that list the information you need, then locate the organization's Web site. For example:

The United States Government Manual is a directory to government agencies. Find the agency that has oversight for the topic you want information on, then visit their Web site. Nearly all of the listed agencies maintain Web sites replete with reports, funding information, standards, etc. OR browse the electronic version of the U.S. Government Manual OR Search the Manual (Select "Government Manual" from the list, then enter search terms)

The Encyclopedia of Associations and the The Encyclopedia of Associations: International Organizations (electronic version= Associations Unlimited) are directories that include more than 15,000 national, international, regional, state, and local associations. Find associations that can provide you with information then locate their Web sites. For example, for cancer information check out the American Cancer Society Web site.
