Spotlight on  go to BMJ Clinical Evidence

What is it?

An evidence-based, point of care, resource designed primarily for primary care clinicians that covers 3700+ clinical interventions and over 230 diseases or conditions seen in primary and hospital care.

CE summarizes the current state of knowledge about prevention and treatment of clinical conditions. Summaries (systematic reviews) are based on available evidence found in the literature from systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and observational studies where appropriate, and if there is no good evidence it says so.

Are there other products like it?

CE is similar to other products that provide clinical summaries based on the evidence (literature) including Essential Evidence Plus, UptoDate, FirstConsult, Dynamed, and ACP's PIER.

Special features

Systematic reviews for each disease/condition includes the following sections:

  • Intervention - the heart of this resource that includes a list (ranked by effectiveness) and evidence summaries of interventions
  • Key points - a one page summary of the review
  • About this condition - background information about the condition including prevalence
  • Updates - materials published since the review search date.
  • Guidelines - links to major guidelines.

Also includes an EBM resources section that links to EBM tools, EBM links, drug information, and EBM training resources.

Search tips

First try using the Sections or Full Review tabs to drill down by disease or condition.

You can also use the Search box at the top of every page to search through the website

  • Boolean operators are allowed. Use the OR (uppercase) operator between synonyms and the AND (uppercase) operator between concepts. Also use parentheses to group the synonyms together to make the search clearer. For example: (nerve OR neuron) AND brain.
  • Use double quotation marks when searching a phrase (e.g. "myocardial infarction")
  • Truncation is allowed using the asterisk (*)
  • Results are weighted by frequency of the search terms in the page.
  • For more search tips see Search Tips under Help/Tutorials box on this page.
