Updated July 7, 2020

In response to the COVID-19, the Ebling Library is coordinating closely with SMPH, campus libraries, and our peer health libraries across the country on the path forward to give you access to our services, spaces, and collection while ensuring the health and well-being of our library staff and patrons.

Ebling Library Space

The Health Sciences Learning Center (HSLC), including Ebling Library, remains closed to all visitors. The Ebling Library and SMPH Facilities are aiming for a target date of August 10 for reopening for health sciences students, staff, and faculty with several safeguards in place. Please be aware that this date can change at any time.

Please contact Christopher Hooper-Lane for more information.

Librarian consultations, reference, instruction

Ebling librarians are fully available for remote consultations and synchronous/ asynchronous library instruction via web conferencing tools (Webex, Microsoft Teams, etc.), video capture, phone, and email.

For the foreseeable future, all consultations and instruction will be delivered remotely.

Requests can me made via Ask a Librarian or directly to designated librarians for your group or unit (liaison librarians).

Requesting electronic articles and book chapters (interlibrary loan)

The Ebling Library continues the interlibrary library loan services for electronic articles and book chapters. Please note that there are still some delays. We will do the best we can to find a library to fill a request.

Please contact Diane Mueller for more information.

Requesting reserves for courses

The Ebling Library is aware that summer 2020 and fall 2020 semester courses may need articles, books, book chapters, etc. The Ebling Library staff will work with you to fulfill your course needs during these times.

Please contact Joe King for more information.

Borrowing library materials and computer equipment

Because the HSLC is closed, all library physical items within the library including open stack books, reserve items, laptops, and computer equipment are inaccessible at this time.

However, laptops are available at Memorial Library between 12 pm – 4 pm Monday – Friday.

Please contact Joe King for more information.

Possible Exceptions Concerning Rare Books, Historical and Special Collections

Contact Micaela Sullivan-Fowler for innovative ways to potentially access material from Ebling’s Vault or other historical repositories. Material from the recent exhibition on the 1918 Pandemic may be available electronically as well.

Returning Materials

Please do not return any items or equipment (laptops, cameras, headphones, etc.) to the Ebling Library. If you need to return materials, you can do so at Memorial Library. Laptops should be returned to the Memorial Library Welcome Desk between 12 pm and 4 pm weekdays. Books and other materials can be deposited in the Memorial Library book return on Library Mall. Any accrued fees will be removed. Materials due during COVID-19 are being shifted to later in the year (including ILL).

If an item is due, please keep it until we are back open. If you are charged late/lost item fees, we can remove them upon the item’s return.

UW-Madison students, staff and other Library Card holders can renew checked out materials online.

Please contact Joe King for more information.
