 <\/p>\n

Rita Charon,<\/p>\n

the godmother of narrative medicine,<\/p>\n

knows words and patients.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She knows doctors too–what we give, what we lose, what we need.<\/p>\n

How we cry.<\/p>\n

How we hush our own beating hearts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She knows about pajama time,<\/p>\n

and all the words we whisper, intimate, to our dictation software:<\/p>\n

Our run-on story-poems of suffering and numbers and plans<\/p>\n

with painful indentations and ironic octothorpes<\/p>\n

(the kids call them hashtags).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She asks us: What happens to our other words?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mine seem lost.<\/p>\n

I have worries before words–I feel the former before I can say the latter.<\/p>\n

Sometimes I can’t ever say them.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The worries beat a rhythm in my left ear,<\/p>\n

pulsatile tinnitus that’s only there when I lie down at the end of the day.<\/p>\n

If I listen closely, worries’ words beat their rhythm there, too:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Failure.<\/p>\n

Isolation.<\/p>\n

Sadness.<\/p>\n

Grief.<\/p>\n

Loss.<\/p>\n

Loss.<\/p>\n

Loss.<\/p>\n

LOSS.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My pajama time with my patients, in their charts,<\/p>\n

has me cradling them in the warmth of my thoughts,<\/p>\n

as my words for them flow into the lifeless virtual space.<\/p>\n

I hunger for their handshakes–cool, frail, sweaty, or wrinkled.<\/p>\n

Do they read my thoughts?<\/p>\n

Do they see how much I love them?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My pajama time with myself overflows with the worries.<\/p>\n

The pulsatility beats time for me.<\/p>\n

Yet there is the occasional moment,<\/p>\n

when consciousness is leaving me,<\/p>\n

and my sleeping husband’s warm arm drapes heavy across my chest,<\/p>\n

and silence sets in.<\/p>\n

A wave of softness washes over me:<\/p>\n

I have done some good.<\/p>\n

And I am deserving, apart from it.<\/p>\n
