{"id":1470,"date":"2021-04-21T18:29:19","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T18:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ebling.library.wisc.edu\/corpus-callosum\/?p=1470"},"modified":"2021-04-21T18:29:19","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T18:29:19","slug":"pajama-time-pandemic-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ebling.library.wisc.edu\/corpus-callosum\/pajama-time-pandemic-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Pajama time\/Pandemic time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Liana Eskola, DO<br \/>\nSchool of Medicine and Public Health<br \/>\n2021<br \/>\nPoem<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rita Charon,<\/p>\n<p>the godmother of narrative medicine,<\/p>\n<p>knows words and patients.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She knows doctors too&#8211;what we give, what we lose, what we need.<\/p>\n<p>How we cry.<\/p>\n<p>How we hush our own beating hearts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She knows about pajama time,<\/p>\n<p>and all the words we whisper, intimate, to our dictation software:<\/p>\n<p>Our run-on story-poems of suffering and numbers and plans<\/p>\n<p>with painful indentations and ironic octothorpes<\/p>\n<p>(the kids call them hashtags).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She asks us: What happens to our other words?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mine seem lost.<\/p>\n<p>I have worries before words&#8211;I feel the former before I can say the latter.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I can&#8217;t ever say them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The worries beat a rhythm in my left ear,<\/p>\n<p>pulsatile tinnitus that&#8217;s only there when I lie down at the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p>If I listen closely, worries&#8217; words beat their rhythm there, too:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Failure.<\/p>\n<p>Isolation.<\/p>\n<p>Sadness.<\/p>\n<p>Grief.<\/p>\n<p>Loss.<\/p>\n<p>Loss.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Loss.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">LOSS.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My pajama time with my patients, in their charts,<\/p>\n<p>has me cradling them in the warmth of my thoughts,<\/p>\n<p>as my words for them flow into the lifeless virtual space.<\/p>\n<p>I hunger for their handshakes&#8211;cool, frail, sweaty, or wrinkled.<\/p>\n<p>Do they read my thoughts?<\/p>\n<p>Do they see how much I love them?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My pajama time with myself overflows with the worries.<\/p>\n<p>The pulsatility beats time for me.<\/p>\n<p>Yet there is the occasional moment,<\/p>\n<p>when consciousness is leaving me,<\/p>\n<p>and my sleeping husband&#8217;s warm arm drapes heavy across my chest,<\/p>\n<p>and silence sets in.<\/p>\n<p>A wave of softness washes over me:<\/p>\n<p>I have done some good.<\/p>\n<p>And I am deserving, apart from it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Liana Eskola, DO School of Medicine and Public Health 2021 Poem &nbsp; Rita Charon, the godmother of narrative medicine, knows words and patients. &nbsp; She knows doctors too&#8211;what we give, what we lose, what we need.
