Coughing through the night<\/span><\/p>\n

As if he were a dog barking\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lips pursed, clubbed nails, cachexic\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His pack of cigarettes lit nearby\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Providing just enough warmth\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From the cool evening\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To make this nightly routine worth it\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I asked them<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Uncle Rohan okay?<\/span><\/p>\n

They replied, \u201cOf course, he\u2019s always been like that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yelling through the night<\/span><\/p>\n

As if she were a siren being tested<\/span><\/p>\n

Agitated, racing thoughts, aggressive\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A force to be reckoned with\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or rather a voice to be heard<\/span><\/p>\n

Is she crying out for help?<\/span><\/p>\n

I asked them<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Aunt Teja okay?<\/span><\/p>\n

They replied, \u201cOf course, she\u2019s always been like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drinking through the night<\/span><\/p>\n

As if he had polydipsia\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hennessey, Black Label, Crown Royal\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His three closest friends\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His breath precipitated his arrival<\/span><\/p>\n

Then came the violence<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not okay<\/span><\/p>\n

I asked them<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Uncle Veer okay?<\/span><\/p>\n

They replied, \u201cOf course, he\u2019s always been like that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All this education, just to be ignored\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m here to help<\/span><\/p>\n

Poking fun at my accent\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m the one that got away\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Who are you to tell us what to do?\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Respect your elders\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

America has corrupted you\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They ask me, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
