That summer the sickness that stole breaths<\/p>\n<p>came, the streets were in flames, our lungs filled<br \/>\nwith shouts that felt like fire, the forests filled<\/p>\n<p>with smoke that summer, life\u2019s breadth<br \/>\nwas expiring, an almost-extinguished breath<\/p>\n<p>such a hot season, such a tired earth<br \/>\nthe expanse filled with caught breath<\/p>\n<p>private breath, lonely breath, labored breath<br \/>\na father\u2019s breath, a child\u2019s brief, breath<\/p>\n<p>a quarantine breath, wet breath, covered breath<br \/>\nLungs working in couplets. cold breath.<\/p>\n<p>We did not share breath\u2014our breath<br \/>\nsuspended in air like the cartoon breath<\/p>\n<p>that used to be funny: all dots. Now our breath<br \/>\nclasped like small animals to our breast<\/p>\n<p>in cloth slings: fragile births. Now the earth<br \/>\nseems tender &amp; ample. People say trees are the earth\u2019s<br \/>\nlungs &amp; you\u2019ve seen how lungs are branched, like trees<\/p>\n<p>The Breath asks <em>Who am I to you? <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Do you own me or give me away? <\/em><br \/>\n<em>what forests are aflame, whose hearts &amp; lungs inflamed?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And what do your lungs sound like <\/em><br \/>\n<em>when you fill them with love?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>2.<br \/>\nA wish<br \/>\nfor the breathing: to inhale easy, fall &amp; rise.<br \/>\nfor the grieving, the bereaved: to dream with softest breath.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dana Maya School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Surgery 2021 Poem &nbsp; 1.
