She knew it.<br \/>\nThough he is gone a year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The nurse told me, this morning my mother lost<br \/>\ntrack of an apple she saved from supper,<br \/>\nhidden\u2014who knows where? She, sunk in<br \/>\nno memory, at times, of anything<br \/>\nfresher than decades ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I&#8217;m here. Will she recall<br \/>\nmy name? It will<br \/>\ncome to that\u2014her mind&#8217;s<br \/>\nimplacable self-deletion.<br \/>\nI try to imagine<br \/>\nand know I will gasp<br \/>\nwhen I fade to <em>Who?<br \/>\nNameless.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Stranger.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cHi, Mama,\u201d<\/em> I say, <em>\u201cDo you know me?\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nShe looks, fogged, then focused,<br \/>\nand smiles wide.<br \/>\n<em>Yes<\/em> is an apple, shiny and solid,<br \/>\nsweet with our history,<br \/>\nstill knowing, for now,<br \/>\nnow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sharon M.
