They give me little heart attacks!<br \/>\nYears later, when we served onions<br \/>\nWith midwestern tacos or bratwurst,<br \/>\nSomeone would ask (and we would all wait for it)<br \/>\nRemember how onions would give AJ little heart attacks?<br \/>\nAnd we would laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Nine years ago today,<br \/>\nAJ was found in an empty parking lot<br \/>\nOn the south side of Milwaukee.<br \/>\nI am not sure if the needle was still in his arm<br \/>\nWhen the paramedics pulled him from his truck.<br \/>\nNor was I there when the doctor sat my parents down<br \/>\nAnd told them despite heroic efforts,<br \/>\nI\u2019m sorry, your son is dead.<br \/>\nBut, I imagine Mom clutched her chest<br \/>\nAnd wailed in pain.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later,<br \/>\nI identified his body at the funeral home<br \/>\nBefore they returned him to dust.<br \/>\nTake your time, the director whispered<br \/>\nWhile Dad waited outside.<br \/>\nBehind closed doors,<br \/>\nHe lay heavy in a cardboard box,<br \/>\nDraped in a blue hospital gown.<br \/>\nRotting like onions in a crate,<br \/>\nI touched my hand to his cheek.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Erika Enk University Health Services, Medical Services 2018 Poem &nbsp; I don\u2019t mean to make you cry.
