Their eyes asked<br \/>\nwhy this high grassy field, so near,<\/p>\n<p>is not theirs to graze. They have bellied the fence<br \/>\nwith their longing and leaning towards the sweet<br \/>\nwind-lain blades: uncut, no maintenance<br \/>\nplanned in this lonely, unpeopled off-season.<\/p>\n<p>It is late February in the Iron Age Village.<br \/>\nI pass the unmanned ticket gate.<br \/>\nThere: gorse-choked foundations\u2014muted rock, aged<br \/>\nsmooth by the wind\u2019s rough hands. I wait.<\/p>\n<p>The ruins seem simple stones again, retreating<br \/>\nfrom history; the grass inviting the cows to eat.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Gorse is a fast-growing weedy shrub throughout England\u2019s Penwith Peninsula.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sharon M.
