Ebling Library for the Health Sciences is hiring for an iSchool graduate MA student interested in acquiring on-the-job reference experience at the public service desk of an academic health sciences library.
Gain valuable knowledge of library and health science resources and services while being paid to help a dynamic group of faculty, staff, and students, while receiving training on:
- Core health science databases
- Evidence based medicine tenets
- Point of care resources
- Citation managers
- And more, depending on interest
all while learning indispensable reference and public services skills.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Staff the public service desk and represent Ebling Library in a welcoming, helpful, and professional manner
- Provide assistance with walk-up, chat, and phone information needs
- Provide basic reference and refer questions to appropriate Ebling staff or other campus entities
- Handle some circulation duties such as checking out materials
- Assist with basic equipment issues
- Complete projects as assigned, depending on interest and availability
Training will be provided in all areas of responsibilities.
Required:
- Accepted or current graduate MA student at the UW-Madison Information School
- Keen interest in reference/public services experience in a library setting
- Curiosity and desire to learn
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Dependability
- Professionalism
- Ability to collaborate with team members
- Ability to follow through when working on independent projects
Preferred:
- Experience working at a library service desk or other customer service experience
- Interest in health sciences
- Experience with UW-Madison campus libraries services and resources
- Experience with and interest in graphic design software
Required Hours:
- Approximately 10-20 hours per week depending upon class schedules and other available staff
- Weekdays between 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Pay:
- $16.00/hour
