Implementation Date Change for NIH Public Access Policy

The director of the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced that the 2024 updates to the NIH Public Access Policy, which were originally slated to go into effect in December, 2025, will now be effective July 1, 2025.

The 2024 updates to the NIH Public Access Policy will require the submission of author accepted manuscripts into the PubMed Central (PMC) repository by the articles’ official publication dates.  The change eliminates the current use of  journal and publisher embargo periods in PMC. Additionally, the NIH encourages the submission of the author accepted manuscripts into PMC upon the their acceptance for publication. This new requirement applies to all peer reviewed works supported by NIH awards and accepted for publication on or after July 1, 2025. For additional information, see the NIH’s notice.
